Right — you have already worked out that Jules Verne wrote all of that.
Me, in my capacity as an amateur carpenter, I witnessed a different story: the meeting between Captain Nemo and Jack (Sparrow), pirate and trickster.
What I noticed, and what I am passing on to you today, was the moment the two of them agreed in principle on a project: a submarine.
The sketch and the big ideas made it onto paper. I know, the sketch does not look like a submarine — but I reckon whatever Jack draws ends up looking like a bottle of rum.
All well and good, except that the moment building started, things went sideways. Maybe because Jack fancied reaching his destination sooner? What is certain is that we ended up with a hookah: Nautilus.
Now, seriously (?): every object I build in the workshop takes shape from an initial plan. But as the plan gets executed, the thing in question — lamp or hookah — seems to ask to be a certain way, to demand a particular look and a particular pace, the moment it finds out whose it is going to be.
That is the magic part of being a carpenter.
Take this one in the photographs: I tried to hurry it along a little and the work simply stalled, as if it were asking me for patience. I took smaller, more meticulous steps, and the Nautilus consented to take shape out of what I had — oak, brass and black granite.
Oh — I forgot to mention: it is Nemo's hookah. The chap I told you about at the start.
Did everyone see that? Because I will not be doing it again. ― Captain Jack Sparrow
