I drew up a plan in the middle of that year, thinking I would be finished in a few days. Said and done — I finished it exactly six months later.
I watched the project as I went, and I "saw" how each part spawned its own variants and adjusted itself to the ones already there. How do I put this — the object (yes, fine, it is a lamp) started to have a direction of its own, and all I had to do was stay patient and curious enough to build what came naturally.
I could tell you it is made of granite, brass and yew, but what Radiance actually taught me was to pay attention to a direction that was drawing itself. The frustration turned up wherever the whole thing held together least, so I read it as a sign: no road through here. Where the right variant appeared, the frustration was replaced by the pleasure of seeing something I had not planned.
Hence the name: Radiance.
